New Talc Ovarian Cancer Lawsuits Target Popular Pharmacy

The number of talc ovarian cancer lawsuits filed against Johnson & Johnson has reached record levels. However, recently, a case was filed that included not only the pharmaceutical giant but also the popular pharmacy, Walgreens.

A spokesperson for consumer reporting site www.talcumpowder.org says, "A woman in Chicago recently filed a claim that included allegations against Walgreens for making talc products available."

According to reports, the woman claims that she used the talcum powder based products, Shower-to-Shower and Johnson's Baby Powder, and that this use has resulted in her developing ovarian cancer. Andrea Harris filed a claim in March 2017, stating that she was diagnosed with the cancer in 2015 and that she purchased the products from Walgreens regularly between 1980 and 2006. She states in her claim that repeatedly using these products over the years led to her development of ovarian cancer and states that Walgreens worked with Johnson & Johnson to keep those products on the shelves, even after other claims had been filed alleging that talc powder causes cancer.

"The claim shows that Walgreens and Johnson & Johnson share a joint office in Buffalo Grove, Illinois," says the representative for talcumpowder.org. "It alleges that plans for marketing and distributing the talc based products were formulated between the two companies at this location."

Studies show that the first link between the use of these talc based products and ovarian cancer was published as early as 1971. Furthermore, in 1982, the first study to investigate these claims found an increased risk of developing ovarian cancer by 92 percent when using these products regularly. Since 1982, more than 25 different studies have conclusively shown the same results which is an elevated risk for developing ovarian cancer when using talc in the genital area regularly and over a long period of time.

The new complaint charges that both companies, Walgreens and Johnson & Johnson, knew about the research and the risks yet they continued to market and sell the products to women. To date, more than 3,000 lawsuits have been filed against Johnson & Johnson, although this is the first reported case to include a retail establishment where the products have been sold.
